Hands On History

Classroom Session Offerings

These popular hour-long sessions are designed to use with class-sized groups of approximately 30 students (maximum amount for optimum experience).  These are done in costume.  Cost is $45/hour or $170/day plus student activity fee of $1.00 or $1.25/student (depending on activity chosen).
 

Colonial/Pioneer

Apple Harvest Time - Make homemade applesauce, taste apple butter, apple cider and dried apples as you learn many ways colonials/pioneers used apples.  Please note this program requires assistance from the teachers and uses plastic knives to cut the apples.  Available only late September to early December.  Student activity fee is $1.25/student.

Chores - Learn how to milk a cow (students milk a sawhorse/plywood cow) and make butter.  A variety of other chores are also included.   Student activity fee is $1.00/student.


Toys - Experience a wide variety of colonial toys and make several enjoyed by colonial or pioneer children.  Choose two from Top, Yarn Doll, Button on a String, Cup and Ball or Flying Propeller.   Student activity fee is $1.00/student.

 

Native American

Second Grade - Explore how Native American children lived in the villages and the skills they would have learned from their parents.  Included are tanning hides, making clothes, pottery, weaving, grinding corn and how Native Americans used games to teach the hunting skills that men would need.  Make either a "talking feather" (student activity fee $1.25) or a medicine bracelet (student activity fee $1.00).

Fifth Grade - Experience the crafts of the Pacific Northwest Coast and Alaskan Natives as well as items from Eastern Woodland, Plains and Southwest tribes.  Make either a "talking feather" (student activity fee $1.25) or a medicine bracelet (student activity fee $1.00). 

Note:  Ms. Reese is not of Native American descent, however has the greatest respect for their culture and offers these reasonably priced programs to share that culture and their message.  
 

Pioneer – The Trail West

Students learn about the pioneers and the trail west.  They get to make butter as they hear about the unique way pioneer women made butter along the trail.  They also hear about the toys and games of pioneer children.  Make two toys to take home.  Choose from Top, Button on a String, Cup and Ball or Flying Propeller.   Student activity fee is $1.00/student.
